Impact of Voltage and Reactive Power Control Devices on the Reliability Assessment of Radial Distribution Networks

This paper presents a method for assessing the voltage and reactive power control impact on the reliability indices of distribution networks. It has been achieved by including network constraints (voltage drop and feeder loading) in the predictive reliability model. The analytical method has been used to evaluate the reliability indices. The proposed method has been tested and validated, using a computational program, in a substation of the Electricity Utility of Maranhão, in Brazil. The results demonstrate that the operation of voltage and reactive power control devices improve the reliability indices of the distribution networks associated with the restoration time, such as SAIDI and the annual unavailability of the load points.
